BMW M faces challenges maintaining manual transmissions
BMW M division head Frank van Meel has indicated that maintaining manual transmission options in future high-performance models is becoming increasingly difficult. While the manufacturer has not officially announced a discontinuation, several technical and economic hurdles exist.
Key challenges include rising engine power and torque levels that exceed the capabilities of current six-speed manual gearboxes, as well as the integration of 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. Additionally, there is a shrinking pool of suppliers willing to develop new manual transmissions for a niche market.
Despite these obstacles, consumer demand remains strong, particularly in the United States, where approximately half of BMW M2 buyers opt for the manual version. While manual options persist in current models like the M2, the future of the transmission in upcoming generations, such as the next M3, remains uncertain.
