BMW M manual transmission uncertainty

Overview

The future of manual transmissions within BMW’s M division is facing increasing uncertainty due to technical, engineering, and economic hurdles. Frank van Meel, head of BMW M, has highlighted that integrating 48-volt mild-hybrid systems presents significant challenges, as these systems require precise software synchronization that is difficult to achieve with manual gearboxes and unpredictable human shifting.

Engineering constraints also play a role, as the torque produced by engines like the S58 six-cylinder currently exceeds the capacity of existing manual gearboxes, such as the ZF S6-53. This has already led to the absence of manual options for certain models, including the M3 and M4 Competition, as well as the M2 xDrive and M2 CS.

Economically, the business case for manual transmissions is weakening due to shrinking supplier support and lower production volumes. However, consumer demand remains high in specific markets; for example, approximately half of G87-generation M2 Coupe buyers in the United States opted for a manual transmission. While BMW M is reportedly seeking solutions to maintain the option for future models, the availability of manual gearboxes in upcoming generations remains uncertain.
