BMW and Mercedes-Benz implement major cost-cutting measures in Germany

Major German automakers are undertaking significant restructuring to improve profitability amid shifting market demands. BMW has launched a voluntary departure program aiming to reduce its workforce by approximately 8,000 employees by the end of 2027. To encourage early exits, the company is offering substantial severance packages, with some employees eligible to receive up to 650,000 euros based on age, tenure, and salary. BMW aims to achieve annual cost savings of 1 billion euros starting in 2028.

Simultaneously, Mercedes-Benz is implementing a productivity offensive to save 800 million euros annually. This strategy includes reducing the number of temporary workers by several thousand across its Sindelfingen, Bremen, and Rastatt plants. While the company is not currently planning to reduce its permanent workforce due to job security agreements lasting until 2034, it intends to launch a new severance program for office staff in December. These moves come as both manufacturers face increased competition from Chinese electric vehicle producers and slowing demand in key markets like China.
