BMW recalls 27,000 vehicles over driveshaft defect

BMW is recalling over 27,000 vehicles in the United States due to a technical issue involving the connection between the driveshaft and the rear differential. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) campaign 26V525000, wear or damage to this connection can cause a sudden loss of power to the rear wheels while driving.

Additionally, the defect poses a risk when the vehicle is parked. If the connection fails, the transmission lock mechanism may not hold the vehicle in place, potentially allowing it to roll if the parking brake is not engaged, particularly on inclines. No accidents or injuries have been reported in relation to this issue so far.

The recall affects specific models including the 540i, 540i xDrive, and M550i xDrive (2021–2023); the 840i and 840i xDrive (2022–2026); and the 750e xDrive (2024–2026). BMW authorized services will inspect the components for free, either reinforcing the connection with adhesive or replacing the shaft and differential mechanism if necessary.
