BMW sedan recall for driveshaft defect

Overview

BMW has issued a recall for approximately 27,000 sedans in the United States due to a defect in the connection between the driveshaft and the rear differential.

According to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, wear or damage to this joint can cause a sudden loss of rear-wheel power during operation. The defect also presents a risk that the vehicle may roll away if the parking brake is not engaged, as the transmission lock mechanism may fail to hold the car in place.

The recall affects various model years of the 5 Series (2021–2023 540i, 540i xDrive, and M550i xDrive), 8 Series (2022–2026 840i and 840i xDrive), and 7 Series (2024–2026 750e xDrive). BMW has reported no crashes or injuries related to this issue. Authorized dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and will either reinforce the connection with adhesive or replace the driveshaft and rear differential mechanism at no cost to owners.
