BMW recalls 27,720 US sedans over driveshaft defect

BMW is recalling 27,720 sedans in the United States due to a defect in the driveshaft-to-rear-differential joint. The worn joint can cause a sudden loss of rear-wheel power while driving and presents a rare risk of the vehicle rolling away if the parking brake is not engaged while the car is in park.

The recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, affects specific model years of the 5 Series, 7 Series, and 8 Series. Included models are the 2021–2023 540i, 540i xDrive, and M550i xDrive; the 2022–2026 840i and 840i xDrive; and the 2024–2026 750e xDrive.

BMW has reported no crashes or injuries related to this defect. Authorized dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and will either reinforce or replace the driveshaft and rear differential at no cost to the owner.
