BMW suspends redundancy program due to high employee interest

BMW has temporarily suspended its voluntary redundancy program following an overwhelming response from employees. The company's internal online portal, used by staff to calculate individual severance offers, experienced technical outages due to high traffic after personal offers were sent to approximately 40,000 employees in Germany.

The automaker plans to reduce its global workforce by up to 8,000 positions, primarily targeting administrative, research, and development roles rather than production staff. This restructuring is driven by the transition to the Neue Klasse vehicle models and an increased reliance on artificial intelligence.

While the program is expected to cost the company hundreds of millions of euros in the short term, BMW anticipates annual savings of approximately one billion euros starting in 2028. Severance amounts are determined by factors such as income and years of service, with some long-term employees reportedly offered sums exceeding several hundred thousand euros.
