BMW to integrate navigation and driver assistance into 3D maps
Starting in October 2026, the BMW Group will begin the phased rollout of a new version of BMW Maps for vehicles equipped with BMW Operating System X. This update integrates navigation, environmental data, and driver assistance information into a unified 3D view on the vehicle's central display.
The new interface is designed to show drivers how the vehicle perceives its surroundings, visualizing the car within its specific lane and road level. This integration aims to improve orientation during complex maneuvers at intersections, multi-level road junctions, and highways. It is specifically intended to enhance the user experience during assisted and semi-automated driving.
Key features include support for the Highway Assistant, which allows for hands-free driving on certain highways at speeds up to 130 km/h, managing both longitudinal and lateral movements. Additionally, BMW plans to expand navigation-guided, semi-automated driving into urban environments starting in 2027, with the initial rollout occurring in Germany.
