BMW 3D mapping and driver assistance integration

Overview

The BMW Group is developing an integrated 3D mapping system in collaboration with Mapbox. Scheduled for a phased rollout beginning in October 2026 for vehicles using BMW Operating System X, the technology aims to consolidate navigation, environmental data, and driver assistance information into a unified 3D view on the vehicle’s central display.

The system, referred to as the BMW MaPS feature, is designed to merge high-precision map data with vehicle sensor technology. This provides seamless visualization for both highway driving and complex urban environments, including lane positioning and road levels to assist with maneuvers at intersections and multi-level junctions.

Key capabilities include support for the Highway Assistant, which enables hands-free driving on certain highways at speeds up to 130 km/h. BMW also plans to expand navigation-guided, semi-automated driving into urban environments starting in 2027, with an initial rollout in Germany.

In a related development regarding traffic safety, researchers from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the BMW Group have developed an artificial intelligence system utilizing advanced sensor fusion. This system integrates data from vehicle-mounted cameras, radar, and lidar with measurements from infrastructure sensors located on sign bridges. The AI creates a digital real-time map, or digital twin, that updates every 100 milliseconds and tracks road users with a positional accuracy of up to ten centimeters. According to Professor Alois Knoll of TUM, the technology allows drivers to react faster to hazards by providing visibility into obscured areas, such as when pedestrians or cyclists emerge from blind corners.
