BMW unveils 2027 X5 SUV lineup with iX5 electric model and hydrogen variant

BMW confirmed that development of the 2027 X5 SUV is in its final stage, with testing underway at its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, USA. The new generation will be offered with five power‑train options, including the fully electric iX5 60 xDrive rated at 578 hp and equipped with a 141 kWh high‑voltage battery – the largest ever installed in a BMW series‑production vehicle, promising a range that can exceed 1,000 km.

A hydrogen‑fuel‑cell version, the iX5 Hydrogen, is slated for series production in 2028, featuring seven flat hydrogen tanks for an estimated 750 km range. Conventional internal‑combustion variants will also be available, such as the X5 40 xDrive (400 hp) and the plug‑in hybrid X5 50e xDrive (490 hp). The SUV adopts BMW’s new “Neue Klasse” design language, offers level‑2 semi‑autonomous driving aids, adaptive chassis control, and optional air‑suspension.

BMW plans to debut the new X5 line‑up in late June 2027, with the electric and hydrogen models highlighted as part of its strategy to expand high‑performance, low‑emission offerings.
