Bodrum, Turkey blaze ignited by woman's suicide attempt destroys 10 hectares

A fire broke out in the maquis and grassland area of Dereköy neighbourhood, Bodrum district, Muğla Province, Turkey, after a 61‑year‑old woman attempted to set herself on fire with gasoline. The blaze quickly spread to about 10 hectares of vegetation.

Rescue teams found the woman about 500 metres from her home, pulled her from the flames and transferred her to hospital with burns on her arms, torso and back. Authorities suspect the fire was caused by the suicide attempt, and she will be taken into custody after treatment.

Fire‑fighting operations involved the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department, the Muğla Forest Regional Directorate, police, gendarmerie and AFAD. Seven helicopters, six firefighting aircraft, eight water‑tenders, three water tankers, two dozers and roughly 70 personnel were deployed, and the fire was brought under control after about 2.5 hours. Cooling work continues in the affected area.
