Turkey 2026 summer fire prevention
Entities: Denizli Forest Regional Directorate · Malatya Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department · Turkey
Overview
Turkey’s coordinated summer fire‑prevention campaign continued through late July 2026. The ban on open fires in Istanbul was extended to 28 Oct, while bans remained in effect in Ankara’s Çubuk district and Amasya. Bursa’s fire‑service network operated from 31 stations with expanded personnel, vehicles, aircraft, drones and water reserves. On 20 July a blaze that started on a cultivated field in Seyitgazi, Eskişehir, jumped to a nearby reforestation zone. Authorities deployed a helicopter, six water tankers, two dozers, graders, TOMA vehicles and an ambulance, involving 73 personnel from fire, police, gendarmerie, AFAD and the Red Crescent. The fire was still being fought, but no casualties or major property damage were reported. The next day a series of forest and land fires erupted across multiple provinces. In Muğla’s Fethiye district a wind‑driven blaze near Göcek Mahallesi prompted the use of 14 helicopters, five fire‑suppression aircraft and ground crews, forcing evacuation of about ten homes. Similar incidents were recorded in Antalya’s Kepez neighbourhood, Aydın’s Kuyucak district, Afyonkarahisar, Elazığ and a land fire in Emet, Kütahya, where a firefighter was hospitalised after inhaling smoke. On 22 July Tekirdağ handed over 50 water tankers to 50 forest neighbourhoods, augmenting the earlier delivery of 10 tankers in May. The goal is to equip 60 villages by year‑end and help extinguish small fires before they spread. On 23 July forest fires in Muğla’s Fethiye district and near the Kütahya‑Eskişehir highway were brought under control. About 350 ha burned in Muğla; 417 forest‑service personnel, 19 helicopters and dozens of ground vehicles were deployed, and Inlice Mahallesi was evacuated. Both incidents were contained without loss of life, thanks to rapid action by the General Directorate of Forestry, AFAD, local firefighters, volunteers and civil‑society groups.
