Bodum recalls 5.9 million French presses due to burn risks

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of approximately 5.9 million Bodum French presses after reports of glass carafes shattering. Bodum USA has received 70 reports of carafes breaking, 48 of which resulted in burn injuries to consumers.

The recall affects eight product lines of 8-cup and 12-cup replaceable glass carafes, including models such as Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper, and Kenya. The units were sold at major retailers including Target, Walmart, and Amazon, as well as through specialty coffee shops, between 1974 and October 2026.

Investigations suggest that using metal utensils to stir coffee inside the glass carafes can cause microscopic scratches or structural weaknesses. When exposed to hot water during the brewing process, these weakened carafes may suddenly crack or burst. Consumers are advised to stop using metal spoons in these carafes and to contact Bodum to request a plastic spoon and a warning label.
