Boehringer Ingelheim pauses €900 million of German investments
Boehringer Ingelheim announced it will cancel planned investments in Germany totaling around €900 million for the period 2027‑2030. The funds were intended for expanding infrastructure at domestic sites, including new laboratory facilities.
The company cited unfavourable conditions in Germany, such as tighter health‑care budget constraints and higher mandatory rebates to insurers, as well as competitive pressure from the United States and Asian markets. Boehringer also noted a U.S.‑linked agreement that requires the firm to invest in American production and research to obtain pharmaceutical tax exemptions.
German head Médard Schoenmaeckers said the next innovation will not be located in Germany under the current circumstances and that the firm must keep pace with developments in the United States and Asia.
