Boeing forecasts massive growth in Africa’s aviation sector by 2045

Africa’s commercial aircraft fleet is projected to more than double by 2045, according to Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook. The fleet is expected to grow from 755 aircraft in 2025 to 1,625 by 2045, necessitating the delivery of 1,165 new planes.

This expansion is driven by a young, urbanizing population and increasing demand for intra-regional travel and connections to the Middle East. Passenger traffic within Africa is forecasted to grow by 6.5% annually through 2045, while traffic between Africa and the Middle East is expected to grow by 7.1% annually.

The growth is anticipated to create a $140 billion investment opportunity in aviation services, including aircraft maintenance, repair, overhaul, airport infrastructure, and air navigation. To support this industry expansion, the continent will require approximately 75,000 additional aviation professionals, including 22,000 pilots, 25,000 technicians, and 28,000 cabin crew members.

Boeing notes that single-aisle aircraft will account for the majority of deliveries, with 870 units expected for domestic and regional routes. The cargo sector is also set to expand, with the freighter fleet projected to rise from 60 to 150 aircraft.
