Boeotia: Scammers steal €400,000 and jewelry from elderly women

Two elderly women in the Boeotia region of Greece have fallen victim to a sophisticated telephone scam involving impersonation of an accountant.

In the first incident, a 90-year-old woman was told that the tax authorities were using a "recording satellite" to detect cash and valuables. To avoid heavy fines, she was instructed to place her money and jewelry in a bag outside her home. While she was inside, an accomplice of the caller stole the bag containing €400,000 and jewelry.

A second victim, a 93-year-old woman in another Boeotian village, was targeted using the same method. She was persuaded to leave €5,000 and jewelry outside her door to avoid tax penalties, which were subsequently stolen by an accomplice.

Local police departments in Livadeia and Orchomenos are conducting investigations into the incidents.
