Elderly telephone fraud scams in Greece and Turkey
Entities: Sevastis · Hellenic Police · Tyrnavos · Kilkis (village), Greece
Overview
Greek police have continued a coordinated crackdown on organised telephone‑fraud rings that target senior citizens. The July 14 raids in Agrinio, Athens and Thessaloniki dismantled three “ghost‑phone” call centres and led to four core arrests. A broader sweep on 18 July expanded the effort to Chios, Volos and Lamia, adding arrests of a 24‑year‑old collector in Chios, a 46‑year‑old suspect previously intercepted at airport, two teenagers in Volos and three suspects—including a 16‑year‑old—in Lamia. Victims surrendered cash and jewellery worth up to €30,000 per case, with total proceeds exceeding €110,000; most seized items were returned. Further operations on 18 July reiterated the pattern, targeting callers who impersonated doctors, relatives or utility technicians and confirming the same scale of arrests and asset recovery. On 23 July police in Kastoria broke up another organised ring after a 47‑year‑old woman reported a scam in which callers posed as tax‑office employees and demanded gold jewellery, bullion and €8,200. A raid seized the cash, gold, four mobile phones and a vehicle, and arrested a 22‑year‑old collector, two minors and an adult accomplice. Investigators are still seeking three additional suspects. In Turkey, an elderly resident of Antalya received a call from someone claiming to be a police officer and invoking the president and the FETÖ terror group. The victim’s daughter recognised the fraud, recorded the conversation and prevented any payment or data disclosure, underscoring the cross‑border use of law‑enforcement pretences to exploit vulnerable seniors. Authorities in both countries stress that the operations are ongoing and that stolen assets continue to be restored to victims. On 24 July 2026, fraudsters again targeted an 83‑year‑old man in Kastoria, posing as tax officials. After extracting gold coins and jewellery, they persuaded him to travel alone to Athens, where he withdrew and handed over roughly €37,000 from his savings.
