Greece's Western Attica Wildfire Ravages 113 sq km, Triggers Legal Action

A wildfire ignited on 31 July 2026 near Kalami in the Platyas area of Boeotia, close to the western slopes of Mount Kithairon. Strong north winds drove the fire southward into the Corinthian Gulf and then eastward across the mountainous terrain, eventually reaching Western Attica. Satellite data show the blaze consumed about 113.277 hectares (over 113 sq km) of forest, farmland and settlements, affecting locations such as Porto Germeno, Alepochori, Megara and other villages.

The fire caused extensive property damage, threatened lives of residents and firefighters, and inflicted serious harm on the natural environment. Regional Governor Nikos Chardalias announced a “zero‑tolerance” stance, filing a legal complaint to support arson charges against those suspected of starting the blaze and pledging to use all institutional and judicial tools to pursue the case. He presented the statement to the public prosecutor and other authorities.

PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis visited the affected areas, warning that the climate crisis must not be used as an excuse for inadequate state preparedness and calling for stronger support for firefighters and civil‑protection services. Climate‑crisis Minister Euaggelos Tournas also toured the fire zones, expressing solidarity with emergency crews.
