Greek wildfire response, legal action & aid

In early August 2026 a major wildfire swept parts of Attica and Boeotia, killing a Danish pilot and a Greek fire‑service coordinator when two firefighting helicopters collided. PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis cancelled a planned trip to Chalkidiki, visited the Boeotia villages of Xironomí and Dómbraína, and urged swift damage assessment, compensation for destroyed olive groves, and modernization of the Hellenic Fire Service.

Attica regional governor Nikos Chardalias filed a legal complaint, declaring a “zero‑tolerance” stance toward anyone responsible for the fire and pledging to use all institutional means to prosecute the arrested individuals and any others found liable.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis convened a two‑minister meeting at the Maximos Hall to accelerate inspections and the distribution of state aid to wildfire victims in Boeotia and West Attica. The government package provides full coverage for home repairs, up to €6,000 for primary residences, rent subsidies of €300‑€500 per month, an immediate €600 cash grant, and a 70 % grant for business losses. Deputy Minister Kostas Katsafados was tasked with briefing the prime minister on implementation schedules, signalling a coordinated effort to deliver compensation and support to affected communities.

Further investigations revealed that the blaze ignited on 31 July 2026 near Kalami in Boeotia’s Platyas area and, driven by strong north winds, spread across more than 113 sq km of forest, farmland and settlements, reaching Western Attica and towns such as Porto Germeno, Alepochori and Megara. Governor Chardalias reiterated the “zero‑tolerance” policy, filing a formal complaint to support arson charges against suspected perpetrators. During site visits, Androulakis warned that the climate crisis must not excuse inadequate state preparedness, while Climate‑Crisis Minister Euaggelos Tournas toured the fire zones to express solidarity with emergency crews.
