Bogotá opens over 4 km of new bike lanes on Avenida 68

The Institute of Urban Development (IDU) officially opened more than four kilometres of dedicated bike lanes along Avenida 68 in Bogotá, covering the stretch between streets 13 and 63. The new infrastructure is expected to serve roughly 2,500 daily cyclists and connects the bicycle network to the TransMilenio corridor on Calle 26, nearby health centres, the Compensar recreational centre and Simón Bolívar Metropolitan Park.

Mobility Secretary María Fernanda Ortiz also announced a new kilometre of vehicle lane between streets 13 and 20 to ease traffic flow for freight and private vehicles. Director Orlando Molano confirmed that the work is part of the megaproject’s groups 4, 5 and 6, with additional groups slated for completion before the end of the year, aiming to link Avenida 68 fully with Avenida Las Américas and Calle 26 under Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán’s plan. The city recently received the international TUR4all accessibility award for inclusive tourism.

The development is part of Bogotá’s broader strategy to expand sustainable mobility and improve public space in the city’s western sector.
