Bogotá Metro 80%+ cameras, traffic safety, ALO Sur

Overview

Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán confirmed in July 2026 that Metro Line 1 has passed the 80 % construction mark, with more than 16 km of its 24‑km elevated viaduct built and eight kilometres of track ready for testing. The system is now in its final testing phase ahead of the passenger‑free “white trial” slated for September 2027 and a commercial launch projected for March 2028.

The metro authority released detailed designs for a new pedestrian link between the line’s second station and the Portal Américas hub of the TransMilenio BRT network. The integration will feature shared ticketing, vertical walkways and three access buildings to streamline transfers once the line opens.

The National Road Safety Agency approved 18 photodetection cameras at key intersections to curb illegal parking, speeding and uninsured driving. City officials warned that road fatalities have risen 30 % in 2026, with motorcycles involved in 88 % of national traffic deaths and 2,244 deaths recorded so far. Over 700 traffic police officers and transit agents have been deployed to the most dangerous corridors, such as Avenida Boyacá and Calle 80.

The Ministry of Transport and the National Infrastructure Agency set August 5 2026 as the start date for the 24.5‑km ALO Sur double‑carriageway linking Sibaté, Soacha and Bogotá, featuring 45 bridges, grade‑separated intersections and dedicated pedestrian‑ and cycling‑paths that will connect with Metro Line 1.

Empresa Metro de Bogotá (EMB) reiterated its labor‑oversight programme, opening confidential digital channels for workers to report wage or benefit irregularities. The Metro20 civic‑culture initiative, backed by Metro Empresa, El Tiempo and Despacio, is encouraging public dialogue on how the new line will reshape neighborhoods, public space and daily mobility.
