Bogotá marks 488th anniversary with citywide celebrations and public works
On 6 August 2026 Bogotá celebrated its 488th anniversary. The district government used the milestone to launch a series of cultural and infrastructure initiatives across the capital.
Free concerts by the Filarmónica de Bogotá opened the festivities, with performances at the Biblioteca Pública Virgilio Barco, the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo and other venues. The Festival de Verano 2026 ran from 31 July to 31 August, offering more than 60 mass‑free events, including lucha libre shows, sports tournaments, cinema‑in‑the‑park, and a city‑wide book distribution by Idartes on the TransMilenio system.
Major public‑works were inaugurated: a new bridge on Calle 153 linking to Autopista Norte, expected to cut travel times by up to 30 minutes; the renovation of three parks in the Kennedy locality (Gran Britalia, Unidad Residencial Ayacucho, Las Luces y Villa Rica) with an investment of over 851 million pesos; and a revitalised public space in Cerro Norte featuring 122 metres of stairs and 453 m² of urban art. Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán and district officials attended the ceremonies, highlighting the city’s commitment to cultural life and improved urban infrastructure.
