Bogotá expands free pet sterilization program as Peru advocates for animal protection measures

The Bogotá District Institute of Protection and Animal Welfare (IDPYBA) announced a program of 10,500 free sterilizations for dogs and cats, targeting low‑income neighborhoods and stray animals. The "Corta a Tiempo" initiative will run throughout July 2026, using mobile veterinary units and two fixed clinics to perform up to 600 surgeries daily.

In Peru, lawyer Karina García of Animalover Solidaridad urged authorities to adopt humane protocols, increase sterilization campaigns and implement microchip identification after a dispute over abandoned dogs at a hospital. She called for a municipal census of pets and education on responsible ownership, warning that stray animals pose a public‑health risk.
