Bogotá implements environmental protections against El Niño
The Bogotá District Secretary of Environment (SDA) has implemented emergency measures to protect the city's ecosystems from the effects of the El Niño phenomenon. To prevent forest fires in the Eastern Hills, authorities have issued an urgent call for citizen cooperation, warning that discarded lit cigarettes, matches, and glass debris can trigger large-scale fires in the current dry and windy conditions.
Simultaneously, the administration of Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán has launched an ecological restoration plan for 17 district wetland reserves. This initiative includes adding over 835,000 square meters to restoration processes and applying organic covers to soil to mitigate evaporation. The SDA has also intervened in 32,479 square meters to eradicate invasive broom, a species that accelerates fire spread.
To ensure long-term resilience, the District has announced an investment of 49 billion pesos for 2026 to fund maintenance, native species planting, and physical protection of these reserves. Additionally, a new environmental monitoring station has been installed at the Córdoba wetland to track water quality and flow.
