El Niño climate risk management in Colombia and Dominicania
Overview
Authorities in Colombia are implementing various measures to mitigate the impacts of the 2026–2027 El Niño phenomenon. In Bogotá, the District Secretary of Environment has launched an ecological restoration plan for 17 wetland reserves and introduced forest fire prevention protocols in the Eastern Hills. This includes a 49 billion peso investment for 2026 to fund maintenance and native species planting.
In the Risaralda region, the environmental authority CARDER is conducting technical follow-ups with public utility companies to ensure water security and prevent shortages in depleted sub-basins. Meanwhile, in the Dominican Republic, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has launched a project, supported by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), to strengthen institutional capacity for responding to climate change and extreme weather events.
