Bogotá implements preventive measures against El Niño

Bogotá and surrounding municipalities are implementing preventive measures to prepare for a potential new El Niño cycle in the second half of 2026. This follows a severe period of water rationing that lasted from April 2024 to April 2025, when historic lows in water reserves forced changes in consumption habits for millions.

While Bogotá aims to be shielded through improved technical and operational readiness, the national situation remains precarious. According to Andrés Santamaría of Asocapitales, eight capital cities in Colombia are currently at a red risk level due to water scarcity and rising temperatures. Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán has expressed a stance of preventive readiness to avoid the extreme restrictions experienced in the previous cycle.
