Bogotá Metro achieves 5.7‑km energized test milestone

The first line of the Bogotá Metro successfully completed a continuous 5.7‑kilometre test on a viaduct, moving an energized train from the Patio Taller in Gibraltar to the Timiza area and onward to the newly referenced Station 4 in Kennedy. The trial verified wheel‑rail interaction, braking performance, and uninterrupted power supply via a third‑rail system, with the train operating at speeds between 80 km/h and 90 km/h.

Technical reports indicated that the test met design tolerances for wear on curves, confirmed stable energy transmission, and provided data for calibrating automatic pilot and signalling systems. City officials, including Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán, highlighted the achievement as a key step toward full operation of Line 1, which will eventually connect the city’s southwestern districts to Calle 72. The metro project still requires approximately 2,500 km of trial runs—500 km in manual mode and 2,000 km in automated mode—before commercial service can begin.

The successful trial is expected to improve Bogotá’s heavily congested public‑transport network and keep the project on schedule.
