Bogotá sculpture 'La Rockera' sparks debate
The installation of 'La Rockera', a bronze sculpture in Bogotá’s Simón Bolívar Metropolitan Park, has sparked debate following its unveiling to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Rock al Parque festival. Created by artist Rafael Melo (known as Maquiamelo), the 3.87-meter-tall, 1,200-kilogram figure depicts a woman wearing headphones, studs, and a star over her eye.
Supporters, including Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán and Culture Secretary Santiago Trujillo, argue the monument honors the presence of women in the music scene and provides a permanent landmark for the festival. The sculpture is notable for being cast using approximately 30,000 projectiles of various calibers.
However, the work has faced criticism regarding its design and symbolism. Some observers and researchers have questioned the technical execution, specifically noting that the figure appears to lack a mouth. Critics have suggested the design fails to adequately represent the freedom and identity of women in rock culture, with some calling for the metal to be recast into a different proposal.
