Puerto Rico power grid faces scheduled maintenance and generator outage

LUMA Energy announced scheduled maintenance, repair and modernization work on the island’s electric system for Wednesday, 22 July 2026. The program will affect sectors in 12 municipalities, with outages lasting up to 13 hours in locations such as Bayamón, Cabo Rojo, Cayey, Coamo, Guánica, Guaynabo, Mayagüez and Quebradillas.

Later that day the company reported a sudden loss of the San Juan 6 generating unit from Genera Puerto Rico, prompting automatic load‑shedding. About 131,654 customers lost power, with Bayamón and San Juan each seeing roughly 43,000 outages. Service was partially restored by early evening, leaving around 9,400 customers still without electricity.

LUMA emphasized that while it does not operate generation plants, it remains in constant contact with the generators to limit the impact on consumers.
