Puerto Rico power grid maintenance

In late July 2026 LUMA Energy began a series of scheduled maintenance operations on Puerto Rico’s electric system. On 22 July the first round affected 12 municipalities, and an unexpected failure of the San Juan 6 generating unit triggered automatic load‑shedding, leaving about 132 000 customers without power before most service was restored that evening.

A week later LUMA announced additional maintenance planned from 27 July to 2 August across 23 municipalities. The work includes vegetation clearing, power‑line replacement, installation of automated devices, substation upgrades and pole‑resilience projects. Genera PR, the island’s main generator, reported that while unit 6 remains offline for capacitor testing and unit 2 operates at reduced output, overall generation capacity remains sufficient to meet demand.

Together, the snapshots show a continuing effort to modernize the grid while managing generation constraints and intermittent outages for residents.
