Bohnice Institutional Cemetery chapel undergoes major reconstruction

The Bohnice Institutional Cemetery in Prague has completed the first major stage of its revitalization with the reconstruction of its central chapel. The project, which cost eight million CZK, transformed the long-neglected ruins into a modern memorial space that integrates historical masonry with contemporary architecture.

A prominent feature of the new design is an open structure made of corten steel, which replaces the original wooden rafters. The shape is intended to resemble a crown of thorns, symbolizing suffering, vulnerability, and hope. The chapel is scheduled to officially open to the public on Thursday, October 1.

Known colloquially as the ‘cemetery of fools,’ the site is noted for its unique atmosphere, lack of traditional tombstones, and historical significance, having served as a filming location for Miloš Forman’s Oscar-winning film Amadeus. The restoration effort follows years of volunteer work to maintain the site and clear debris.
