Bohnice Institutional Cemetery chapel reconstruction

Overview

The Bohnice Institutional Cemetery in Prague has completed the first major stage of its revitalization through the reconstruction of its central chapel. The eight million CZK project transformed the long-neglected ruins into a modern memorial space by integrating historical masonry with contemporary architecture.

A key element of the design is an open structure made of corten steel, replacing the original wooden rafters. The shape is intended to resemble a ‘crown of thorns’, symbolizing suffering, vulnerability, and hope. The chapel is scheduled to officially open to the public on October 1.
