Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School security guards arrested for alleged student assault

Two security watchmen at Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School (BOGISS) in Ghana have been arrested and interdicted following allegations of sexual assault against a 14-year-old student. The victim, a special needs student with autism, was reportedly targeted on multiple occasions on the school campus between late June and early July 2026.

Following the incident, the school administration reportedly labeled the student guilty of “sexual misconduct” and withdrew her boarding status for one academic year. This disciplinary action has drawn sharp criticism from Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch), which argued that a child who is allegedly abused should be treated as a victim requiring protection rather than being sanctioned. Eduwatch called for an immediate independent review of the school’s decision.

In response to the growing controversy, Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak stated that the Ministry of Education is intervening to ensure the student receives necessary medical attention and counseling. The Ministry has also directed that the student’s revoked boarding status be reinstated. The Ghana Education Service (GES) is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the matter and the conduct of the school authorities.
