Investigation into student assault at Bolgatanga Girls

Overview

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has launched an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old student with autism at Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School in the Upper East Region.

Two school watchmen were arrested and interdicted following reports that the student was targeted on four separate occasions between late June and early July 2026. The incidents reportedly took place at various campus locations, including a security post and near the dining hall.

Controversy has emerged regarding the school administration’s response, as they reportedly labeled the student guilty of ‘sexual misconduct’ and withdrew her boarding status for one academic year. Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) criticized this disciplinary action, arguing that a child who is allegedly abused should be treated as a victim requiring protection rather than being sanctioned. Eduwatch has called for an immediate independent review of the school’s decision.

In response, Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak stated that the Ministry of Education is intervening to ensure the student receives medical attention and counseling. The Ministry has also directed that the student’s revoked boarding status be reinstated. The GES continues to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and the conduct of the school authorities.
