Bolivia arrests Attorney General Roger Mariaca in corruption probe
Bolivian authorities have arrested the country’s Attorney General, Roger Mariaca, as part of a large-scale investigation into corruption and narcotics trafficking. The operation, conducted by the Special Force to Fight Crime (Felcc), also resulted in the apprehension of 13 other officials, including former government minister Eduardo Del Castillo and Santa Cruz departmental prosecutor Alberto Zeballos.
In Sucre, police intervened at Mariaca’s office within the State Attorney General's Office and sealed his private residence and vehicle. The arrests took place at Viru Viru International Airport as Mariaca and Zeballos arrived on a flight from Sucre.
While government officials have accused Mariaca of leading a criminal organization linked to drug trafficking, some members of the Public Ministry have challenged the legality of the actions. Through a social media broadcast, staff denounced the arrests as an informal “kidnapping” carried out without judicial warrants or clear documentation.
