Bolivian judicial and security leadership restructuring

Overview

Bolivia has undergone a series of leadership changes within its judicial and security institutions. In early September, Attorney General Roger Mariaca appointed five new departmental prosecutors for Chuquisaca, Oruro, Potosí, Beni, and Tarija to restructure the Ministerio Público. Mariaca stated the appointments of local natives were intended to “strengthen their understanding of local needs” and emphasized a commitment to transparency and ethics.

By late September, the government implemented further changes within the police and correctional sectors. Colonel Lucio Jiménez Vargas was appointed interim Inspector General of the Bolivian Police via Presidential Decree 5723. Additionally, in Santa Cruz, Colonel Carlos Veizaga Flores assumed the governorship of the Palmasola penitentiary. This change follows allegations of excessive force and mistreatment by female inmates, alongside investigations into alleged irregular payments involving the Director of the Penitentiary Regime.
