Bolivia faces political standoff and healthcare corruption
Bolivia is facing significant institutional challenges across its judicial and healthcare sectors. In the political sphere, former President Evo Morales remains at the center of a legal standoff. Despite multiple arrest warrants issued by the Public Ministry for charges including sedition, terrorism, and human trafficking, law enforcement has been unable to execute them. This impasse is largely driven by Morales's social and territorial support in the Cochabamba tropics, where supporters maintain blockades and security perimeters to prevent police or military entry.
Simultaneously, the national healthcare system is struggling with allegations of institutional capture and corruption. Issues within the Caja Nacional de Salud (CNS) have come to light, including a 2023 report of a suspected network in Cochabamba that allegedly sold nursing positions and contracts for up to $3,000. Additionally, a 2025 report from the Procuraduría identified a court sentence against two CNS officials involving the irregular purchase of hospital equipment in El Alto, resulting in a reported economic loss of 54.37 million bolivianos.
