Bolivia faces potential natural gas shortages by 2029

Bolivia faces a projected natural gas shortage starting in 2029, necessitating the import of between 7 and 10 million cubic meters per day to meet domestic demand. Geologist Gustavo Navarro warns that declining production and a lack of new discoveries will deplete existing reserves within a few years. To prevent shortages, Navarro suggests that YPFB executives should begin negotiations with Argentine authorities to secure gas from the Vaca Muerta field, utilizing existing pipeline infrastructure.

While importing gas could stabilize the market, the estimated cost of approximately $8 per million BTU presents a significant economic challenge for the Bolivian government.

In a separate development regarding energy efficiency, the Margarita gas field is integrating solar energy into its operations. The field, which accounts for one-third of Bolivia's national gas and condensate production, is utilizing photovoltaic technology at the Margarita 10 well. This initiative, overseen by the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Energies, aims to reduce reliance on conventional electricity and modernize monitoring processes through remote operations and robotic maintenance.
