Bolivia appoints interim Attorney General amid corruption probe

Bolivia's Legislative Assembly has appointed attorney José Armando Urioste Viera as interim Attorney General, replacing Roger Mariaca Montenegro. Mariaca was removed from office following the promulgation of Law 1773, which allows for the immediate suspension of the Attorney General if they face formal indictment or precautionary measures for serious crimes.

Mariaca is currently under investigation and faces indictment for alleged links to drug trafficking and organized crime. Prosecutors have requested six months of preventive detention for Mariaca and several other officials, including Alberto Zeballos and Martín Irusta. The investigation follows allegations that the former Attorney General used his influence to obstruct investigations into criminal organizations.

Upon assuming his interim role, Urioste announced plans to conduct a comprehensive legal audit of the Public Ministry to address corruption and institutional instability. He also committed to an institutional restructuring aimed at ending hiring based on personal recommendations and restoring public trust in the judicial system.
