Bolivian authorities sanction bakeries over bread price increases

Authorities in La Paz and El Alto have issued formal warnings to 25 establishments for selling bread at 1 Boliviano, following inspections aimed at preventing unilateral price hikes. Abril Zapata, head of the Consumer Attention and Service Center (CAUC), reported that these measures target shops and stalls to ensure the stability of basic food prices.

Some merchants reportedly faced threats from other bakers to raise prices. To encourage price stability, businesses maintaining the 0.80 Boliviano rate have been awarded a “Conscious Provider” seal. These actions are governed by Law 453 and Supreme Decree 2130, which mandate that providers supply basic basket goods at fair prices.

Andrés Paye, executive secretary of the Federation of Mining Workers of Bolivia, has criticized the price increase, arguing that unilateral decisions by bakers without consensus will disproportionately affect low-income families. Paye warned that rising costs for daily staples could turn basic nutrition into a luxury for many citizens.
