Bologna officials receive anonymous death threats via letter

An anonymous, handwritten letter containing death threats against Bologna Mayor Matteo Lepore and former Emilia-Romagna President Stefano Bonaccini was discovered at the Bologna City Hall. The letter, which was found by a postal worker, explicitly stated, “Stefano Bonaccini and Matteo Lepore are condemned to death.”

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, reviewing surveillance footage from the area and the city hall offices to identify the perpetrator. Investigators are also conducting technical examinations of the letter for fingerprints or biological traces. This incident follows previous instances of intimidation against Mayor Lepore, who has previously received threats via email and social media, necessitating personal security measures.

Political leaders have condemned the act. Elly Schlein, secretary of the Democratic Party, described the threats as “extremely serious and unacceptable,” while Michele de Pascale, president of the Emilia-Romagna Region, expressed full solidarity with the victims. Local officials emphasized that such violence is an attack on democratic institutions and the freedom of political discourse.
