Political intimidation in Bologna
Overview
A series of political intimidation incidents has occurred in Bologna during an electoral campaign. The situation began when entrepreneur and civic list promoter Giovanni Favia reported receiving an anonymous and “rather violent” intimidating letter at his home. Favia indicated he would turn the material over to the Digos for investigation.
Following this, a handwritten letter containing death threats against former Emilia-Romagna President Stefano Bonaccini and Bologna Mayor Matteo Lepore was delivered to Bologna City Hall. The unsigned note, discovered by a postal worker at the Palazzo d’Accursio municipal offices, stated, “Stefano Bonaccini e Matteo Lepore sono condannati a morte” (Stefano Bonaccini and Matteo Lepore are condemned to death).
Law enforcement authorities are currently investigating the incident and reviewing surveillance footage from the area to identify the individual responsible for delivering the letter. Investigators are also conducting technical examinations of the letter for fingerprints or biological traces. This follows previous instances of online harassment and threats directed at Mayor Lepore, which had already necessitated increased security measures.
Political leaders have condemned the actions as unacceptable attacks on democracy. Democratic Party Secretary Elly Schlein described the threats as “gravissima e inaccettabile” (extremely serious and unacceptable), while Emilia-Romagna President Michele de Pascale expressed solidarity, calling the act an unacceptable strike against democratic representatives.
