Bologna leads Italy’s anti‑fascist commemorations amid protests

Italy marked several anti‑fascist and liberation commemorations in July‑August 2026. In Bologna, civil society groups and trade unions issued a renewed call for street mobilisation ahead of the 46th anniversary of the 2 August 1980 railway‑station bombing, demanding truth and justice for the victim Abderrahim Fakir and denouncing security‑decree restrictions.

A cycling relay titled “Insieme per non dimenticare il 2 agosto 1980” passed through the country from the Brenner to Bologna, concluding with a public event on 2 August. The relay, organised by local ANPI sections and the Circolo Naturalistico Novese, aims to keep the memory of the 85 victims alive.

In Enna, officials announced a civic “Pastasciutta della Resistenza” on 25 July, commemorating the 1943 arrest of Mussolini and the historic spaghetti‑distribution gesture of the Cervi brothers. The program includes speeches, a theatrical reading and a night‑time “spaghettata”.

Other towns held related acts: Figline e Incisa Valdarno organised two “Fermati un minuto” ceremonies to mark the 82nd anniversary of the 1944 Liberation; Stazzema hosted the “Progettare la Memoria” MasterClass, focusing on the 1944 Vaccareccia massacre; and Viterbo saw debate over the removal of a “Remigrazione” banner and the preservation of a “Casa del Balilla” sign, reflecting ongoing tensions over historical memory.

These events illustrate a coordinated push across Italian municipalities to honour anti‑fascist history while confronting contemporary political and social debates.
