Collectively these events sought to keep the memory of victims such as the 85 people killed in the 1980 Bologna railway‑station bombing alive and to provoke discussion about Italy’s historical legacy.

Later in the month, Bologna mayor Matteo Lepore clarified that the civic rally scheduled for 2 August in Piazza Maggiore was meant to celebrate the city’s democratic tradition and recent victims, including Abderrahim Fakir, and expressly denied any link to the 1980 Pilastro bombing. He warned against conflating the two gatherings and instructed police to prevent misleading slogans or banners.
