Bolsa Família: Brazilian government announces 15% benefit increase
The Brazilian government has announced a 15.04% increase in the Bolsa Família social program, effective October 1, 2026. The adjustment aims to compensate for inflation based on the INPC index accumulated between March 2023 and August 2026. Under the new decree, the minimum monthly benefit will rise from R$ 600 to R$ 691, while the average payment per family is expected to increase from R$ 675 to R$ 777.
The announcement comes 17 days before the first round of general elections, sparking significant political debate. Opposition candidates, including Ronaldo Caiado and Flávio Bolsonaro, have criticized the move as electoral populism or an attempt to buy votes. Conversely, the Ministry of Planning and Budget stated that the adjustment is a legal, routine update to preserve purchasing power and that fiscal space is available to cover the costs.
The estimated fiscal impact is R$ 5.8 billion for the remainder of 2026 and approximately R$ 22 billion for 2027. Legal challenges have been initiated; the Attorney General's Office (AGU) requested the Supreme Court (STF) to recognize the legality of the update, while other representatives have sought to suspend the increase through the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) and the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
