Bolsa Família updates include BPC application rules and 2026 eligibility shifts

New procedural changes in Brazil allow families receiving Bolsa Família to apply for the Continuous Cash Benefit (BPC) without immediately suspending their current income transfers. This adjustment follows Law No. 15.077/2024, which integrated Bolsa Família payments into the income calculations used to determine eligibility for BPC, a benefit for elderly individuals or people with disabilities.

The new understanding was developed through collaboration between the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, the INSS, the Attorney General's Office, and the Public Defender's Office to prevent low-income families from losing essential income while awaiting BPC decisions.

Looking toward 2026, the Bolsa Família program is also undergoing updates to expand coverage and strengthen complementary benefits. With the minimum wage set at R$ 1,621, eligibility thresholds will be adjusted. Families in extreme poverty are defined by a monthly per capita income of up to R$ 218, while those in poverty fall between R$ 218.01 and R$ 654.
