Quetta train bombing kills at least 24, injures over 70

On May 24, 2026, a suicide vehicle‑borne improvised explosive device detonated near the Chaman Phatak railway crossing in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan's Balochistan province. The blast struck a train carrying military personnel, their families and civilians en route to Eid celebrations.

The explosion derailed several carriages, overturned two coaches, ignited a fire and damaged nearby buildings and parked vehicles. Official counts reported at least 24 deaths and more than 70 injuries, with some sources citing up to 30 dead and over 100 wounded.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility, saying the attack targeted security forces. Pakistan’s prime minister Shehbaz Sharif and Balochistan chief minister Sarfraz Bugti condemned the “cowardly act of terrorism.” A medical emergency was declared in Quetta hospitals and a large‑scale investigation was launched.
