Pakistan internal conflict and militant violence

Overview

Militant attacks continued across Pakistan in 2026. In April, a police convoy was ambushed in Diamer, Gilgit‑Baltistan, killing three officers; the same month, two coordinated assaults on mining sites in Chagai, Balochistan, left at least 19 dead. Early May saw the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claim 11 security personnel killed in a series of operations across Balochistan, and Lieutenant Colonel Khalid Hussain was killed in a counter‑terror operation that authorities blamed on Indian‑sponsored terrorists. Human‑rights groups reported a surge in forced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Balochistan, documenting dozens of victims. On 8 May, security forces repelled a large Fitna al‑Khawarij assault in Hangu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, killing many militants but also causing civilian casualties. Mid‑May brought a wave of bombings in Lakki Marwat markets, killing between seven and nine people and injuring dozens. The BLA claimed a suicide train bombing in Quetta on 24 May, killing at least 24‑30 passengers, many of them security personnel. A surge of suicide attacks in early June added further casualties in both Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Intelligence‑driven raids in June eliminated dozens of militants in both provinces, while the army reported killing senior BLA officers and Indian‑backed fighters in separate operations. Cross‑border strikes in late June targeted militant hideouts in Afghanistan, killing 29 militants and prompting diplomatic protests. In early July the BLA carried out a suicide‑truck attack on a Pakistan Coast Guard camp in Jiwani, claiming more than 30 deaths. The province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa expanded its police force and conducted further anti‑militant raids, while TTP attacks in late July killed over 56 soldiers. In late July, militants linked to Afghan insurgent groups attacked a police convoy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, killing nine officers and 28 others were injured; security forces killed 15 militants during the exchange.
