Bonaire seeks to regain control of housing market amid shortage

Bonaire is facing a significant shortage of affordable housing driven by population growth, labor migration, and tourism. The island's population has increased from approximately 15,679 in 2011 to around 28,000 in 2026, which has intensified the demand for residential space.

To address this, the island government aims to regain control over the housing market by accelerating construction, expanding social housing, and better utilizing available land. Deputy Jennifer Mohamedjoenoes stated that the government intends to take more decisive action through regulation and increased cooperation with housing corporations and developers to ensure residents see visible progress.
