Bonaire housing market shortage

Overview

Bonaire is experiencing a significant shortage of affordable housing, a crisis driven by tourism, labor migration, and population growth. The island’s population has risen from approximately 15,679 in 2011 to roughly 28,000 by 2026.

In response, the island government is attempting to regain control of the housing market. Deputy Jennifer Mohamedjoenoes stated that the government intends to take “more decisive action through regulation and increased cooperation with housing corporations and developers” to accelerate construction, expand social housing, and improve land utilization.
